The first question you should be asking yourself is why you are wanting to start a career in modeling? Many people think that modeling is something that you can just start, no problem. However, there is a lot more to modeling than just being a pretty face or having the look. Though starting off if you don’t fit the type, it will be even harder for you to even get a start in modeling. Modeling agencies are usually looking for people that fit a certain type, those requirements include size. Even those looking to go into plus size modelings have to fit a certain size. For the guidelines that most agents work with they are looking for women to be around 5’6”, at least a size 6, with measurements of 34B-24-34 and in the age range of 14-21 years old. Men even have to meet certain requirements as well. Men should have a height of six foot, maybe just a couple of inches below or above and wear a size 40R. Plus size model requirements are just a bit different, they need to be 5’8” to 6’ in height and wear a size that falls somewhere between 8-12, aged over the age of eighteen. Be leery of an agency that is claiming that they take petite models especially being that to be a petite model you would have had to have some fame before or an agent would have had to have taken a special interest in you for some reason or the other. It takes an agent with influence to push a model to the front stage; which can make getting started as a model somewhat more difficult.
Are you still reading? If you have made it to this point, you have gauged that you fit the requirements and have an interest in modeling still. The recommendation at this point is to find yourself a good modeling school. Modeling school can be a pretty expensive affair, so do your homework and be informed. Take the time to talk to students that have already been to the schools you are looking at and take a look at your pros and cons for each school. Go tour the campus and talk to the staff, look at the pricing. Can you afford that school? What after graduation help does the school offer? Do they have a great reputation? Do they have programs that will help you find an agent to work with after graduating?
When you are looking at schools too, you should note how knowledgeable the staff is. Did they have any training or schooling in Milan or Paris, or did they work in those places? Keep in mind that the price of school may vary depending on the area you are looking to attend school in and schools in a larger market may run you 1,500 for a course schedule that runs 12-20 weeks. It can vary as well. As you research these schools reach out to advertising agencies and see about the booking agents that are working with the models from the schools you are researching. Take note if the school follows up with the agencies that help their students get work upon graduation. Another way to see if you really fit into modeling; is to attend what they call an open call. Modeling agencies will hold this type of event in areas where the market is larger like LA, NYC, Chicago or Miami. Take a look at the local agencies in your area and see if they have any open calls coming up and go to an open call. This will help you really figure out if you have the type and look that agencies are looking for as they scout models. The first thing is if the agency finds your look marketable.
Modeling may not be the fit that you are looking for, though there are still plenty of career opportunities to be found in the entertainment industry. The field of acting is even more flexible and there are not those pesky size restrictions in place either. You can literally be any age or any size to work as an actor or actress in the entertainment industry. There are an abundance of roles for teens and children looking to become young actors for companies like Nickelodeon and many other Teen and Kid TV shows and movies. Recently there is a huge influx of roles for children and teens making breaking into the entertainment business much easier for a teen or child wanting to get started in acting.
A talent agent is the best person you can choose to represent you and get you set up with auditions, in fact can be pretty much the best way to even get auditions as you start a career in acting. Agents will usually take on children and teens without schooling in acting or any kind of experience in the field. Casting directors typically hold casting calls until they have filled the role they are casting for. The best time to start a career as an actor or actress is when you are young. Many children tend to get their start in the entertainment industry when they are around 9 years old, mostly because there are more roles for children than there are usually for adults in the entertainment industry.
The entertainment business is really competitive and if you want to give your child a boost into the acting world, find them some good acting classes to start out with. To have a successful career it takes training and there are a lot of options out there for children trying to find a good acting school too. There are classes that can also help your child with proper headshots, how to craft their resume and teach them techniques for auditions. Acting has a lot to offer for your child over modeling and can make a great alternative career path.
