The best way to define improvisation is literally to define it as “acting in the moment”. No practicing or any script involved for this area of acting. All of the actor's words and actions are meant to be a pure response to what is occurring in the actor's environment at that exact moment. Improv is considered one of the hardest forms of acting to master because you have to master being spontaneous. To perform a scene in improv successfully takes a lot of skill and experience. Improv classes are actually recommended to those that are in the acting field that want to challenge themselves and to help inspire them to invent a new line of thought. This also can help them learn how to speak and act more in the moment. Coaches in Improv classes use various exercises to help them create scenes from nothing and sometimes the audience helps provide the ideas for the scene. Improv exists solely to do what has not been done before in the acting field.
When you go into acting you learn that typically a great performance is gauged on memorizing lines and using rehearsed movement, many have forgotten that acting is not a science. How do you react if your supporting scene partner actually forgets a line? Or what if the director, heaven forbid, is actually not satisfied with your interpretation of the character's role? Improv comes in at times like this because sometimes the script does get changed at the last moment. Learning how to react to that unexpected change without missing a beat can essentially help save a scene or add more value to the project in general. Improv helps an actor to react and listen; rather than just reading lines off when it is their turn.
Having awareness when you come into a scene can help the actor understand the action or series of actions they are performing. After much practice the actor will have a whole tool kit that can help them with a variety of options that fit any scene or situation. They will be able to even look at the script and see many different ways a scene can be performed or played out. Having that kind of flexibility is really appealing to casting directors and directors. When working with actors with Improv training they can play around with the scene and get the most out of the scene.
Improv extends beyond acting and can even help a person develop better business skills and can benefit their personal life as well. Executives will sometimes take Improv classes to help their interpersonal skills and can create better listeners; helping a person to understand body language and pay closer attention to those that are around them.
While sometimes comedic in nature, improv can be really rewarding and fun to learn as an actor or anyone for that matter. This type of acting is certainly rewarding in its own way. Actors that have been around for sometime will take improv classes or use improv as a means to escape from the rigid memorization of lines and script, helping them to stay fresh. There is a lot of freedom with improv and you will learn a lot about living in the moment. Find an Improv course in your area today!
